Why Again?
Dehumanization, inherent to genocides, is a process. It grows from neglect to erasure. For too long, many of us have stood by, watched, listened, talked, or stayed silent before the dehumanization of Palestinians. Germany has increasingly suppressed public debates, primarily framed as an effort to fight antisemitism.
Over the past decade, criticism of Zionism and Israel’s policies and actions against Palestinians has been harshly criminalized. Repressive state practices have become institutionalized: demonstrations and conferences have been prohibited and canceled, public funding and awards denied, and the immigration law has tightened. Deportations are on the rise.
What paths can we take, and what language should we employ to invite others to dissent against the dehumanization and genocidal violence against Palestinians? How can we create collaborative and mutually protective platforms that effectively confront the oppression in Germany?
Nahed Samour invites us to explore participatory forms of knowledge while addressing legal obligations and responsibilities that can be crucial for future legal proceedings.
Hannah Tzuberi asks us to join in challenging the German imagery of the Jew as a desired ideal victim whose uncanny mirroring becomes intertwined with anti-Palestinian racism.
Amos Goldberg challenges us to critically examine how the fight against antisemitism inverts and projects Israel’s crimes onto the Palestinians and all those who stand in solidarity with them.
How can we confront this dangerous inversion used to justify settler colonialism, annexation? We want to expose and confront the mechanisms of dehumanization, reminding ourselves that genocide is not a sudden event, but an ongoing process.
